Giving Back as a Business Person

by | Apr 28, 2024 | GDPR Advice

In the hustle and bustle of trying to grow our business, it’s easy to lose sight of where we began and the hands that helped us along the way. Yet, there’s huge value in remembering our roots and extending a helping hand to those who are just starting out, just as we were once helped.

So, how can we actually give back without it also taking us away from our own business growth?
Here are some impactful ways that don’t take hours of time:

  1. Mentoring: Offer your time and expertise to mentor others who are navigating the same path you once travelled. Share your insights, offer guidance, and lend a supportive ear to those who are finding their footing. Local Enterprise Offices run mentoring programmes as do many business networking organisations.
  2. Free Zoom Sessions: Hosting sessions for newcomers in your industry is a great way to give back and also expand your own network, making these links can be worthwhile for all parties as work can be shared and passed between you.
  3. Supporting Charity: Get involved in charitable initiatives related to your field or community. Whether it’s volunteering your time or donating resources, contributing to causes you believe in is a meaningful way to give back.
  4. Offering Support: Reach out to individuals who may be facing challenges or uncertainties, and offer words of encouragement and support. Sometimes, a simple gesture of kindness can brighten someone’s day and inspire them to keep pushing forward.
  5. Sharing Wisdom: Share snippets of advice and lessons learned from your own experiences. Whether through social media, blog posts, or informal conversations, imparting your knowledge can empower others on their journey is a lovely way to give back.
  6. Being Approachable: Strive to be an approachable expert in your field. Create an environment where others feel comfortable seeking guidance and learning from your expertise.

None of the above acts will drag you away from your business for hours and all can be done in varying scales. Maybe even just picking one thing from the above list to focus on for a few weeks could be just the boost your business needs. As a businesss woman I try and focus on one or two of these points at a time so that I am always learning and meeting new people, by doing this I’ve found that my personal and business growth has been vast.

  • Good Karma: I really believe the universe has a way of rewarding selfless acts of kindness. By giving back, you sow seeds of goodwill that often come back to enrich your own life in unexpected ways.
  • Personal Growth: Giving back allows you to reflect on how far you’ve come and stay connected to your initial motivations. It highlights areas where you’ve grown and areas where you still have room to improve.
  • Networking Opportunities: Engaging in charity events and mentoring relationships expands your network and introduces you to new contacts and friends who share your values.
  • Fulfillment: There’s a profound sense of fulfillment that comes from knowing you’ve made a positive impact on someone else’s journey. It adds depth and meaning to your own career trajectory.

As you continue on your professional journey, remember the power of giving back. By paying it forward, you not only honor those who helped you along the way but also pave the path for others to follow in your footsteps.
